Leadership in Organizations (Guest Blog)
Leadership has been much talked about throughout time because of its importance in the history of organizations, whether social, political or even military. It has always been a topic debated among big businesses, however, regardless of whether the leader in the organization is born or made, it is undoubted that a leader is valued in their company for being a driver and generator of added value. Some specialists view leadership as a broad and visionary activity that seeks to discern the competence and characteristic values of an organization. In this sense, leadership can be interpreted and analyzed from two perspectives: as a leader's personal quality and as a function within an organization, community or society.
The second perspective is that which tends to predominate as a study of leadership, so that leadership can be understood as a process of interaction between people in which one of them leads through personal influence and power, the energies, potentialities and activities of a group to reach a common goal in order to transform both the company and the people who collaborate in it.
Organizations depend, to grow and endure leadership of their leaders and this is valid for those who are for profit, as well as those who do not. Since organizations depend on the leader, we need to see what aspects of leadership are important.
A good leader must meet the following four conditions:
- Commitment to the mission.
- Communication of vision.
- Confidence.
- Personal integrity.
But the leader must not only comply with these conditions, he must also fulfill certain virtues that will guide him in making good decisions. These virtues are prudence, temperance, justice and strength. The task of the leader is not so easy, he must be able to have very good communication and an ability to integrate, to make the members of the organization release their energy for the achievement of a common goal. Communication plays a leading role because it allows us to transmit what’s inside our heads exactly as it is. And the integration allows efficient actions to be taken jointly and without disconnections.
Basically, leadership is a way of being, as the leader is forming day by day: in the passion for mission, in action and in fundamental values. In addition, a leader must not only delegate responsibilities but must expand power to others, be humble and consider substitutes.
So we can define leadership as a process of interaction between people in which one of them leads, through their personal influence and power, the energies, potentialities and activities of a group, to achieve a common goal in order to transform both the company as well as the people who work in it for the greater good. In addition, when you exercise leadership, you are acting as an example to others, whether good or bad. In some cases, the influence can be harmful, affecting not only the work behavior, but also influencing the values of lives of others. In this way, leadership is also a huge responsibility as you are not only influencing the task at hand, but also the very lives of the people who look up to you and who are following you.
In short, leadership is important as it is vital to the survival of any organization. It is important, because it is the ability of a boss to guide and direct. An organization can have adequate planning, control, etc. but still won’t be able to survive if it lacks an appropriate leader. And even if that organization lacks planning and control, having a good leader will make up for it, sooner or later.
