Security Upgrades To Consider For The Outside Of Your Workplace (Collaborative post)
Your workplace could include sensitive information and valuable equipment that you don’t want the wrong people getting their hands on. By investing in some security measures around the exterior of your work premises, you can keep unwanted visitors out. Below are just some of the most effective commercial security measures to consider.
Access controls
Access controls can allow you to authorise who comes in and out of your workplace. There are a few different types of access controls that you can look into. These could include:
- An intercom: Visitors press a buzzer and talk to someone inside the building via an intercom who then decides whether to grant them access. This could be an audio intercom or video intercom.
- Coded entry: Visitors have to enter a code in order to enter your workplace. This could be integrated with an intercom - allowing staff to enter using a code and guests to rely on the intercom.
- Keycard/fob access: Another option could be to hand out keycards or fobs to authorised personnel that they can scan in order to enter.
- Vehicle registration readers: If you have a car park, you could authorise who is allowed to park here by setting up a camera that reads people’s number plates and then automatically opens a barrier if the number plate is recognised.
Some of these access controls are likely to cost more to install than others. If you rent your premises, you may also have to get permission before installing any new access controls.
Metal fencing
When it comes to yards and outdoor areas, it could be important to consider perimeter fencing. Metal fencing tends to be more secure than metal fencing as it’s much harder to break through. You can make metal fencing ultra secure by building it tall and making it hard to scale. Some work premises install barbed wire or electrified fences, but this could have the negative side effect of making your premises less friendly and approachable.
Motion-sensing lighting
Many intruders break into properties at night because it’s easier to get in undetected. Adding exterior lighting to your property could help put off would-be burglars. Motion-sensing lighting is a good solution, because it uses less energy by only turning on when people are detected nearby. Make sure to add exterior lighting around your premises so that all potential entry points are illuminated.
Surveillance cameras
Surveillance cameras will catch any intruders in the act - making it easier to report a crime, claim compensation and find the culprits. It’s also a great crime deterrent in itself - most burglars or vandals will think twice if they see a camera. Make a point of installing your camera somewhere visible but out of reach, and make sure it’s covering the most vulnerable entry point of your premises. Installing multiple cameras could be more expensive, but could allow you to cover more angles.
Obscured glass windows
Allowing people to see inside your workplace through windows could invite burglars to target you. By using obscured glass, you can prevent people from peeking into your windows, while still allowing light to pour in. There are different ways to obscure glass - tinted windows and frosted glass are two popular options.
